Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Basra in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Hamdi also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
Ahmet Hamdi began work in Al-Qurnah (Kurna) in 1880/81, at about 23, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ahmet Hamdi in Ramadi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Ahmet Hamdi then moved back to Basra, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1894, then Baghdad (Bağdat) and Amarah (Amare) from 1894 to 1900. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Hamdi back to Baghdad from 1900 to 1902. The last posts were in Ramadi again from 1902 to 1907, first as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), from 1906/07 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 730 in 1906/07, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Ramadi, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
