Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Salih Naci Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was an official (memur). Salih Naci had four years of schooling, at the Musevi Mektebi, and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Baghdad in 1885/86, at about 24, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Salih Naci in Karbala (Kerbela) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1889 to 1899 the annual entries place Salih Naci in Basra, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Basra, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
