Life#
Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Yosef Efendi came from the Chaldean Christian (Keldani) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). In all Yosef knew four languages, Arabic, English, French and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Yosef began work in Baghdad in 1883/84, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Yosef as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Baghdad, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1888/89. Yosef then moved to Karbala (Kerbela) from 1889 to 1892, then back to Baghdad from 1892 to 1897. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) and Koprubasi from 1898 to 1903 and Şişli in 1903/04, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 600 in 1898/99, as Posta Memuru in Beirut, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 450 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
