Life#
İbrahim Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Jewish (Musevi) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); İbrahim also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Baghdad in 1891/92, at about 28, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İbrahim in Baghdad, the birthplace, in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi). İbrahim then moved to Basra from 1893 to 1899, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The lists have no entry for 1899 to 1902. The last posts were in Al-Faw (Fav) from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 1,700 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Al-Faw, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
