Life#
Mehmet Kâmil Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Kâmil also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Baghdad in 1886/87, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Kâmil in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1894/95. From 1898 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Kâmil in Nasiriyah (Nasıriye).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 630 in 1906/07, as Seyyar Memur in Nasiriyah, when 69 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
