Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1864/65 (AH 1281), Mehmet Halit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1878, at about 14, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; 31 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. Every annual entry from 1888/89 to 1899/1900 places Mehmet Halit in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Beykoz.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 400 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beykoz, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 38,400 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
