Life#
Mustafa Efendi was born in Sille in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa began work in Sille in 1878, at about 14, with 11 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, 31 worked unpaid for 11 years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mustafa in Conel as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1891/92. Mustafa then moved to Gjirokastër (Ergiri), Servia (Serfiçe) and Elassona (Alasonya) from 1892 to 1895, then back to Servia from 1895 to 1901. The last posts were in Neapoli (Nasliç) from 1901 to 1904, with a rise to acting director (Müdür Vekili) and to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 540 in 1903/04, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Neapoli, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
