Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Sadettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1889/90, Sadettin began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Sadettin in Hereke as a deliverer (Müvezzi). Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1892 to 1895, then Eyüpsultan in 1895/96 and Istanbul in 1896/97. The last posts were in Beykoz from 1897 to 1906, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1905/06 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 550 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Beykoz, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 53,880 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
