Life#
Mehmed Mazhar Efendi was born in Tuna in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmed Mazhar also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmed Mazhar began work in Bergama in 1888/89, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 305 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmed Mazhar in Izmir (İzmir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1902/03. For 1894 to 1897 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Ödemiş in 1903/04, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 305 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Seyyar Memur in Ödemiş, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 33,780 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
