Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Osman Nuri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1887/88, Osman Nuri began work in Izmir, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 385 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Osman Nuri as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Izmir, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Soma from 1900 to 1904.
The salary went from 385 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in Soma, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
