Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mahmut Nedim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1877/78, Mahmut Nedim began work in Thessaloniki, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Mahmut Nedim in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, in the office for important affairs (Mühimme Kalemi), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1891/92. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1901 to 1903 and Bandırma in 1903/04.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 750 in 1894/95, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Thessaloniki, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
