Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Anastaş Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Anastaş knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum), Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Anastaş began work in Thessaloniki in 1882/83, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Anastaş in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1885/86. Next came Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1887 to 1892, then Ioannina (Yanya) from 1892 to 1900. The last post was in Mersin in 1901/02, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 630 in 1901/02, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Mersin, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
