Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Hasan Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hasan Nazmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1874/75, Hasan Nazmi began work in Thessaloniki, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Hasan Nazmi in Berat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Nazmi then moved to Bitola (Manastır), Serres (Siroz) and Petrich (Petriç) from 1876 to 1880, then back to Serres from 1880 to 1883. Next came Giannitsa (Yenice-i Vardar) from 1883 to 1888. The last posts were in Strumica (Ustrumca) from 1888 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 600 in 1878/79, as Muhabere Memuru in Petrich, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 136,740 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
