Life#
Sabri Efendi was born in Debar (Debre) in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Sabri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Debar in 1880/81, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Sabri in Strumica (Ustrumca) as a chief official (Başmemur), where the entries run to 1892/93. Sabri then moved to Bitola (Manastır) from 1893 to 1897, then Ohrid (Ohri) from 1897 to 1906. The last post was in Debar, the birthplace, in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 540 in 1906/07, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Debar, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 116,340 kuruş, 81 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
