Life#
İskender Lâmi‘ Efendi was born in Debar (Debre) in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İskender Lâmi‘ also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian and Greek (Rum).
Work began in Chrysoupoli (Sarışaban) in 1886/87, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with İskender Lâmi‘ as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kavala. İskender Lâmi‘ then moved to Nea Zichni (Zihne), Chrysoupoli and Gracko from 1889 to 1892, then back to Chrysoupoli from 1892 to 1894, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Kavala again from 1894 to 1898.
Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 500 in 1892/93, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Chrysoupoli, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less.
