Life#
Born in Debar (Debre) in 1877/78 (AH 1294), Mahmud Ferid Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Tapu Katibi". Mahmud Ferid had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Bulgarian, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1895/96, Mahmud Ferid began work in Veles (Köprülü), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Mahmud Ferid in Sjenica (Seniçe) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Prizren and Zebefçe from 1898 to 1903 and Pristina (Priştine) in 1903/04.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 550 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Pristina, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
