Life#
Mehmet Ali Efendi was born in Debar (Debre) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Ali also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Work began in Keşan in 1882/83, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mehmet Ali in Keşan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Devebagirtan in 1889/90, then a return to Keşan from 1890 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ali to Istanbul in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru, and Tekirdağ in 1895/96, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then back to Keşan from 1896 to 1902. The last posts were in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) from 1902 to 1906.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 900 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Alexandroupoli, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
