Life#
Born in Karahisari sahib in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Ömer Lütfü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bursa in 1875/76, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Ömer Lütfü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ruse (Rusçuk). Ömer Lütfü then moved to five places in ten years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1882/83, then back to Bajil from 1887 to 1889. The annual lists then follow Ömer Lütfü to four places in nine years, then Bethlehem (Beytüllahim) from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Tyre in 1903/04 and Malatya in 1904/05 and Elazığ from 1905 to 1907. Few officials served in as many places; 38 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Manakhah, lay about 2,950 km from Karahisari sahib, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 1,200 in 1889/90, as 2. Müdür in Az Zaydiyah, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
