Life#
Born in Merzifon in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Osman Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Osman Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1887/88, at about 16, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Osman Nuri in Diyarbakır as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1893/94, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in 1889/90. Next came Adana and Tarsus from 1894 to 1897, then a return to Adana from 1897 to 1900, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1899/1900. Osman Nuri then moved to Mersin, Mount Athos (Aynaroz) and Blagoevgrad (Yukarı Cuma) from 1900 to 1904. The last post was in Sivas in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 720 in 1899/1900, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Adana, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
