Life

Born in Merzifon in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Rasim Efendi was the child of a teacher (muallim). Ömer Rasim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 19, in 1898/99, Ömer Rasim began work in Merzifon, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ömer Rasim in Amasya as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Amasya, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
