Life#
Born in Niğde in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Abdullah Vahdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Abdullah Vahdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Niğde in 1895/96, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Abdullah Vahdi in Izmir (İzmir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last post was in Geyve in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Geyve, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less.
