Life#
Abdullah Efendi was born in Niğde in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Abdullah also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 24, in 1898/99, Abdullah began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Abdullah as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in Galata, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Koprubasi from 1903 to 1905 and Beyoğlu in 1905/06, with a rise to Sube Memuru in 1903/04.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 475 in 1905/06, the peak, as Sube Memuru in Beyoğlu, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
