Life#
Hamdi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hamdi began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1898/99, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Hamdi in the same office, stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
