Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Karakin Yaver Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Karakin Yaver had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), attended the telegraph school as well, and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 10, in 1871/72, Karakin Yaver began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; 33 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 10 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Karakin Yaver as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1881. The annual lists then follow Karakin Yaver to Beirut (Beyrut), Quneitra (Kuneytire) and Chania (Hanya) from 1881 to 1884. From 1884 to 1906 every annual entry places Karakin Yaver in Izmir (İzmir), first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1885/86 as Muhabere Memuru and from 1905/06 as Mandapost Memuru.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 650 in 1891/92, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Izmir, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
