Life#
Mihran Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Mihran knew four languages, Armenian, English, French and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 27, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mihran in Galata as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1900/01. Next came Beyoğlu in 1901/02. The last posts were in Galata again from 1902 to 1906.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Beyoğlu, when one in three paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 54,600 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
