Life#
İstefan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all İstefan knew four languages, Armenian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Istanbul in 1878, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with İstefan as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in Galata. Next came Chania (Hanya) from 1883 to 1895, with a rise to official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), then Bitola (Manastır) from 1898 to 1901. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1901 to 1905.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 700 in 1883/84, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Chania, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
