Life#
Fornaraki Hasan Lamii Efendi was born in Chania (Hanya) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father's occupation was "Kaymakam Muavini". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Fornaraki Hasan Lamii also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1876/77, Fornaraki Hasan Lamii began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Chania, paid from the start, on 120 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Fornaraki Hasan Lamii in Chania, the birthplace, as a fair-copy clerk (Mübeyyiz), where the entries run to 1883/84, with a rise to chief clerkship (Başkitabet) in 1881/82. The annual lists then follow Fornaraki Hasan Lamii to Crete (Girit) from 1884 to 1891, then five places in 20 years, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in 1893/94. The lists have no entry for 1898 to 1905. The last post was in Preševo (Preşova) in 1911.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,300 in 1893/94, the peak, as Bidayet Mahkemesi Muddei Umumi in Heraklion, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less.
