Life#
Salih Sudi Efendi was born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1860/61 (AH 1277), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Sudi also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian and Serbian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Few officials knew Serbian; only 4 of the 5,211 officials did.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Pristina in 1875/76, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Salih Sudi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Skopje (Üsküp). Next came a return to Pristina, the birthplace, from 1877 to 1880. In 1880/81 the lists place Salih Sudi in Kosova.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Skopje, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 20,400 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1880/81. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Priştineli memurlar" by ÖMER CAN (2023) probably refers to Salih Sudi, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and page and a place of service agree.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
