Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Harput in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1876/77, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Harput, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 245 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Mehmet Tevfik in Malatya as Tabur Katibi, where the entries run to 1879/80. The last posts were in Van from 1881 to 1889, first as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru), from 1885/86 as a chief clerkship (Başkitabet) and from 1888/89 as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru).
Pay rose from 245 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 360 in 1885/86, as Başkitabet in Van, when one in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1888/89. Mehmet Tevfik probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Harputlu devlet adamları" by ENES MUTLUAY (2018) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and second number agree).
