Life#
Born in Amasya in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Ahmet Daim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Daim began work in the Mal Kalemi in Amasya in 1866/67, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Ahmet Daim in Merzifon in the land office (Arazi Kalemi). Ahmet Daim then moved to Üsküdar in 1873/74, then Ankara from 1874 to 1878, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Daim to Ayaş and Yıldızeli (Yenihan) from 1878 to 1886, then Ergani from 1886 to 1894. Next came Mardin from 1894 to 1903, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last post was in Ergani again in 1903/04.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 800 in 1894/95, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Mardin, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 221,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1903/04. Ahmet Daim probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval kayıtlarına göre Amasyalı memurlar" by SELÇUK SARI (2013) (the name and the birthplace agree).
