Life#
Migirdiç Râsim Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Migirdiç Râsim also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1881/82, at about 24, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Migirdiç Râsim in Elazığ as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Migirdiç Râsim to Ergani from 1883 to 1889, then Midyat from 1889 to 1891. Migirdiç Râsim then moved back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1891 to 1899. The last post was in Malatya in 1899/1900.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 400 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Ergani, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
