Life#
Born in Neapoli (Nasliç) in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Zeynel Sami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Zeynel Sami had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Work began in Neapoli in 1877/78, at about 19, with four and a half years without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Zeynel Sami as an official (Memur) in Karacabey (Mihaliç), where the entries run to 1887/88. Zeynel Sami then moved to Sancaktepe from 1888 to 1898, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Mustafakemalpaşa in 1898/99. The last posts were in Bursa from 1899 to 1902.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 600 in 1888/89, as Muhabere Memuru in Sancaktepe, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1901/02, the list of 1902/03 (AH 1320) gives the status word Vefat (death).
