Life#
Sıvacıyan Agop Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1856/57 (AH 1273) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father's occupation was "insaat Ustasi". Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Sıvacıyan Agop also wrote English, French and Turkish.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1875/76, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Sıvacıyan Agop in Mersin as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Sıvacıyan Agop then moved to Aleppo in 1878, then back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1878 to 1883. Next came five places in 14 years, with a rise to Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in 1895/96 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1896/97, then a return to Beyoğlu from 1898 to 1905. The last posts were in Al-Faw (Fav) from 1905 to 1907. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 1,080 in 1896/97, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Basra, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 100 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
