Life#
Born in Sivas in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Bekir Galip Efendi was the child of an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 26, in 1884/85, Bekir Galip began work in Aleppo (Halep), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Bekir Galip as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Malatya, where the entries run to 1891/92. From 1892 to 1904 the annual entries place Bekir Galip in Ergani, first as a central office official (Merkez Memuru), from 1898/99 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The lists have no entry for 1896 to 1898.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 500 in 1892/93, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Ergani, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
