Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Mecid Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Hüseyin Mecid had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 17, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1887/88 to 1906/07 places Hüseyin Mecid in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), from 1888/89 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
The salary went from 180 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 60,240 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
