Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hüseyin Hüsnü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1864/65, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a soldier (Asker), where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to registered mail official (Taahhüt Memuru) in 1888/89. The last posts were in Ayasofya from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 320 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 500 in 1888/89, the peak, as Taahhüt Memuru in Istanbul, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
