Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Mahmut Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mahmut had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1886/87, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Mahmut as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1900/01, with a rise to official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in 1894/95. In 1901/02 the lists place Mahmut in Balat.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 300 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 42,300 kuruş, 47 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
