Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Ali Ferit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Ferit began work in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Ali Ferit in İğneada as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came six places in nine years, from Soufli (Sofulu) to Eşme, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1899/1900, then Ödemiş from 1900 to 1905. The last post was in Gerede in 1905/06. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 600 in 1905/06, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Gerede, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
