Life#
Ali Galip Bey was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Dahiliye Muhudari". Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Civil Administration (Mülkiye Mektebi); Ali Galip also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali Galip began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 23, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1891/92 to 1904/05 places Ali Galip in Istanbul, the birthplace, with five changes of title, from accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) to chief clerkship (Başkitabet) in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 1,000 in 1901/02, in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi) in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
