Life#
Ali Neşet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1888/89, Ali Neşet began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1891/92, to 1901/02, every annual entry places Ali Neşet in the same office, goods and stores office (Eşya Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 250 in 1899/1900, the peak, in the Eşya Kalemi in Istanbul, when 12 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 11 years of salary come to 17,880 kuruş, 27 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
