Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), İsmail Şükrü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Pasa'nin agasi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İsmail Şükrü began work in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1861/62, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places İsmail Şükrü in Aksaray as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail Şükrü to Üsküdar from 1870 to 1872, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1872 to 1876. İsmail Şükrü then moved to Aksaray and Sirkeci from 1876 to 1879, then back to Istanbul from 1880 to 1888. Next came Fatih from 1888 to 1895, then Yeni camii postanesi in 1895/96, as a registered mail official (Taahhüt Memuru). The last posts were in Emirgan from 1896 to 1903.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 850 in 1895/96, as Taahhüt Memuru in Yeni camii postanesi, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 245,160 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
