Life

Hasan Sıtkı Efendi was born in Amasya in 1861/62 (AH 1278), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Sıtkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Hasan Sıtkı began work in Amasya in 1880/81, at about 19, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1890/91, to 1896/97, every annual entry places Hasan Sıtkı in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Amasya, the birthplace.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 350 in 1896/97, as Muhabere Memuru in Amasya, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 25,800 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
