Life#
Ahmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Tevfik also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen (Şumnu). Next came Varna, Ankara and Sason from 1867 to 1874, then Amasya from 1874 to 1894. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Tevfik to Gümüşhacıköy from 1894 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Mecitözü from 1897 to 1903. Entries spanning 39 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 500 in 1876/77, as Muhabere Memuru in Amasya, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 36 years the salary stood below the first, 380 kuruş against 400; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. After the last annual entry, for 1902/03, the list of 1903/04 (AH 1321) gives the status word Vefat (death).
