Life#
Mehmet Yekta Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Unpaid work as a mülazım (apprentice) lasted two years. Every annual entry from 1865/66 to 1895/96 places Mehmet Yekta in Istanbul, the birthplace, with five changes of title, from 4. Sinif Teftis Memuru to 1. Sinif Polis Komiseri in 1890/91. Only 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
