Life#
Mustafa Asim Efendi was born in Dagistan in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Asim also wrote Turkish and spoke French. From 1877/78 to 1901/02 every annual entry places Mustafa Asim in Istanbul, with four changes of title, from Teftis Memuru to chief police commissioner (Başkomiser) in 1899/1900.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 1,200 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Başkomiser in Istanbul, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 213,600 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
