Life

ZİYAETTİN EFENDİ was born in Dagistan in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Meclisi idare Memuru". Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; ZİYAETTİN also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). In all ZİYAETTİN knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.

Work began in Beyoğlu in 1902/03, at about 20, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1903/04 places ZİYAETTİN in Istanbul, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1903/04 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
