Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Bahaeddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a pasha (paşa). Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani). Bahaeddin knew four languages, English, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Istanbul in 1902/03, at about 21, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Bahaeddin in the same office, money order office (Havalename Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 450 in 1905/06, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
