Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Kemal Efendi was the child of an attorney (dava vekili). Ahmet Kemal had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1901/02, at about 20, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1904/05 and 1905/06, place Ahmet Kemal in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Svilengrad, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
