Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Ahmet İzzet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet İzzet also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1901/02, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1904/05 places Ahmet İzzet in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beyoğlu.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 250 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less.
