Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Ahmet Ragıp Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Ahmet Ragıp had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1897/98, Ahmet Ragıp began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Ahmet Ragıp in Beykoz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1902/03. The last post was in Istanbul, the birthplace, in 1903/04.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Beykoz, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 4,800 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
